“She cannot have gone far. Her horse is still here.”

Jocks’s words drifted easily to Sarra inside the cave. She waited anxiously as he peered around the clearing, relieved when his gaze skated over the bush hiding the entrance without stopping.

“She would not get far on foot with an injured man,” he added.

“Maybe MacNachton had a horse,” the man she’d knocked out said.

“I did not see one.” Jocks didn’t look pleased at the suggestion. “Spread out. Search for them.”

“What about Jasper?” The man Calum had first knocked out gestured to the one who’d been run through. “He needs looking after.”

“Leave him for now,” Jocks ordered.

“But he could die,” the fellow protested with alarm.

“So?” Jocks asked heartlessly. “Do you want to be the one to explain to Lord d’Angers that she got away because one man felled us all?”

The fellow’s eyes widened in fear; then he turned to move into the woods, apparently resigned to leaving the hapless Jasper to his fate. It only took a glance from Jocks to make the third man move off quickly as well. It left Jocks alone in the clearing. Sarra watched him glance about, then stiffened with worry when he moved toward her mare.

Much to her satisfaction, the moment he neared the animal, her mare reared up, then turned and bolted off into the woods. Probably headed for the castle, Sarra thought, and hoped so. It would raise the alarm and make sure men were sent out. If that happened, Jocks and the others would flee for d’Angers’s land. At least she hoped so.

A small sound from the back of the cave made her glance back, and Sarra frowned. Her rescuer didn’t have time to wait for the men from the castle to come looking for them. She needed to get him back to the castle quickly.

Her gaze slid back to the clearing, but there was nothing out there for her. Her mare was gone and Jocks was there, waiting. She knew he was hoping to hear that one of his men had spotted her. What he was more likely to hear was that men from the castle were coming, but she couldn’t wait that long. Well, she could, but the man now bleeding out in the back of the cave couldn’t.

Calum’s horse shifted, drawing her gaze, and Sarra eyed him thoughtfully as she considered her options. The first that came to mind was getting both herself and Calum on the horse and riding out of there, but Jocks’s presence and Calum’s weakness could be a problem. If they weren’t quick enough to avoid Jocks attacking them…And if Calum fell off the horse…

Another option was to mount the horse alone and ride back to fetch help. Sarra had no doubt that alone she’d be quick enough to avoid Jocks stopping her, but he’d no doubt see where she came from, discover the cave, and might go in and look around. Both the secret tunnel and an undefended Calum would be discovered then, and she couldn’t risk either outcome.
